Prime Minister Mark Carney attended a vigil on Friday, February 13, 2026, in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, as the country mourned victims of a school attack that authorities describe as among the worst mass shootings in recent Canadian history.
Police said the violence unfolded on Tuesday, February 10, at a secondary school and a nearby home, leaving nine people dead, including the 18-year-old alleged shooter, and injuring 25 others. Authorities said the suspect killed her mother, Jennifer Jacobs, 39, and her 11-year-old stepbrother, Emmett Jacobs, before heading to the school, where five students and an education assistant were killed.
Investigators have not publicly identified a motive. Officials said police had responded to the suspect’s home on previous occasions tied to mental-health concerns, and Reuters reported that firearms had been seized at one point and later returned after an appeal by the owner.
The tragedy has reignited calls in remote communities for stronger mental-health services and sustained local support capacity, as residents gathered at memorial sites and the province observed an official day of mourning.
