Carney to unveil new plan in Yellowknife to defend Canada’s North and Arctic

Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to travel to Yellowknife today to announce a new plan to defend Canada’s North and Arctic region, according to his official schedule. The Prime Minister’s Office said the announcement is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. local time, followed by a meeting with Northwest Territories Premier R.J. Simpson and a visit to local infrastructure.

The move comes as the North and Arctic continue to rise on Ottawa’s sovereignty and defence agenda, with growing emphasis on protecting Canada’s northern approaches, strengthening military readiness and expanding infrastructure in Arctic regions. Canada’s Arctic Foreign Policy says the safety, security and defence of the Canadian Arctic are a fundamental government priority and critical to the collective defence of North America.

The expected announcement also aligns with the broader defence direction laid out in earlier federal documents, especially Our North, Strong and Free, which described asserting Canadian sovereignty in the North and Arctic as an urgent priority in a changing threat environment. Federal infrastructure documents also point to a roughly C$136 million project in Yellowknife for a new headquarters for the 1st Canadian Rangers Patrol Group and elements of Joint Task Force North.

So far, the government has not released the full text of the new plan, its funding total or its implementation timeline. That means the story is best treated, for now, as a major strategic announcement ahead of fuller policy details expected later today.
