A red plush horse with a downturned mouth and a small gold bell has become an unlikely viral hit in China ahead of the Spring Festival, which ushers in the Year of the Horse. The toy was originally meant to be a cheerful Lunar New Year decoration, but a stitching mistake flipped its smile into a frown—prompting social media users to nickname it the “crying horse.”

Vendors at Yiwu International Trade City in Zhejiang province say demand surged after photos spread online. The shop owner, Zhang Huoqing, said she initially offered a refund when the flaw was discovered, but later kept producing the sad-faced version as customers began seeking it out and shelves sold out quickly.

Reports say the toy resonated with young professionals who joked that the “crying horse” reflects how people look at work, while a smiling version reflects how they look after work. The trend also fits into China’s broader appetite for “ugly-cute” collectibles
