Dr. Nabil G. Seidah, a leading biomedical researcher at the Montreal Clinical Research Institute (IRCM) in Canada, has been named the 2025 Great Arab Minds Award winner in the Medicine category, recognizing his pioneering contributions to heart health and cholesterol regulation. The announcement was made on 24 December 2025 as part of the annual awards launched by UAE leadership to honor distinguished Arab talent worldwide.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, congratulated Dr. Seidah on his achievement via social media, highlighting the significance of his work and its impact on advancing treatments to reduce cardiovascular disease risk globally.

Originally from Cairo, Dr. Seidah moved to Canada in 1974 after completing his doctoral studies, and his research led to the discovery of the PCSK9 protein, a breakthrough that paved the way for a new generation of cholesterol-lowering medications now widely used in clinical practice.

Observers point to the supportive scientific infrastructure in Canada — including funding opportunities, advanced research facilities, and international collaboration — as key factors that have enabled scientists like Seidah to thrive and make lasting contributions to global health.

The Great Arab Minds Award, now in its third edition, celebrates excellence in six fields including medicine, natural sciences, engineering, literature, economics, and architecture, with each laureate receiving both recognition and a significant monetary award
