Elections Alberta says the Chief Electoral Officer has officially issued a citizen initiative petition for a constitutional referendum proposal titled "A Referendum Relating to Alberta Independence", allowing signature collection to begin within a defined window.
According to the Jan. 2, 2026 release, the signing period runs from Jan. 3 to May 2, 2026, and only the official signature sheets will be accepted.
The petition requires at least 177,732 valid signatures, equal to 10% of votes cast in Alberta’s 2023 provincial general election, and canvassers must be registered and follow specific rules before signatures can be collected and submitted by the May 2 deadline.
