The federal government is expected to make an announcement today, Friday, April 17, 2026, in Quebec City about the Canadian Dental Care Plan, a major public health program that affects millions of Canadians who rely on support to reduce the cost of oral health care.
Health Minister Marjorie Michel is scheduled to make the announcement at 1:30 p.m. Eastern Time, alongside Jean-Yves Duclos, Member of Parliament for Quebec Centre. A media availability is expected to follow the announcement.
The announcement comes shortly after the federal government opened the 2026-2027 renewal season for the Canadian Dental Care Plan. The renewal period began on April 15 and runs until June 1, 2026.
The program is aimed at eligible Canadian residents who do not have private dental insurance and whose adjusted family net income is below $90,000 a year. Ottawa says the plan is designed to make oral health care more affordable for people who might otherwise delay or avoid treatment because of cost.
According to the federal government, more than 6.3 million Canadians are now enrolled in the plan, and more than 4 million have already received oral health care through it. The government also says eligible Canadians save about $900 a year on average through the program.
Current members are being urged to renew their coverage before June 1. Those who do not renew on time may face a gap in coverage, and dental services received during that gap will not be reimbursed retroactively.
