Several leading Canadian universities have made a wide range of free online learning content available to the public through internationally recognized digital education platforms, allowing learners worldwide to access university-level courses without formal enrollment or prior academic qualifications.
The courses are delivered through Coursera and edX, two global online learning platforms widely used by universities and educational institutions. Learners can access lectures and course materials free of charge under the platforms’ audit option, which enables open participation without mandatory fees.
While course content is fully accessible at no cost, universities note that obtaining an official certificate upon completion remains optional and subject to a fee. Enrollment in the free learning track does not require payment and does not limit access to core educational materials.
Participating institutions include:
University of Toronto
University of British Columbia
University of Alberta
Université de Montréal
The available courses span a broad range of disciplines, including digital skills, science, health, social sciences, and technology, offering flexible learning pathways for individuals seeking to expand their knowledge or enhance professional skills.
Many courses also provide English subtitles, improving accessibility for learners who may not be native English speakers.
According to the platforms, the courses are open globally and can be joined at any time, allowing learners to study at their own pace and according to their individual schedules.
