Loblaw outlined a C$2.4 billion investment plan for 2026 aimed at expanding discount retail and strengthening store operations through a broad renovation push, while adding new Shoppers Drug Mart and Pharmaprix locations, including pharmacy-led care clinics.
The company said the plan includes 70 new locations in 2026, featuring 31 hard-discount No Frills and Maxi stores and 34 Shoppers/Pharmaprix pharmacies and care clinics. Loblaw also signaled additional store upgrades and continued work on a large automated distribution hub in Caledon, Ontario, while projecting “well over” 9,000 new retail and construction jobs tied to the investment cycle.
Why it matters:
Households remain under affordability strain, and food costs continue to be a major day-to-day pressure point. Canada’s Food Price Report 2026 projects overall food prices could rise by 4% to 6% in 2026, reinforcing why discount formats and private-label choices are increasingly central to budget management.
Practical step:
Build a fixed weekly list, compare unit prices (per 100g / per litre), and use discount and private-label options strategically to lower the bill without cutting essentials.
