Montreal ambulance service “wake-up call”: union survey flags retention risk over the next five years

A CSN survey of Urgences-santé paramedics in greater Montreal is raising a blunt question for emergency services: who will still be on the job five years from now?
Out of 279 respondents, 47 said they expect to remain in their current role. Another 104 said they are planning a career change, and about 20 said they expect to retire within the same period — together, roughly 44% who may be headed for the exit through a switch or retirement.
In its statement, the union points to sustained strain on the job — heavy workloads and both physical and psychological risk — and argues pay is no longer competitive. It also notes the last wage increase was on April 1, 2022, that the collective agreement has been expired since April 1, 2023, and that labour action has been ongoing since July 6 while essential services continue.
