The federal government announced close to $10 million in funding for SkillPlan (the BC Construction Industry Skills Improvement Council) to develop, deliver, and evaluate a national energy-assessment training program linked to the heat and frost insulator Red Seal trade, positioning the work as part of Canada’s climate and low-carbon economy agenda.
Employment and Social Development Canada said the announcement was made in Port Coquitlam, B.C., by Secretary of State (Labour) John Zerucelli, with the project financed through the Sustainable Jobs stream of the Union Training and Innovation Program under the Canadian Apprenticeship Strategy.
SkillPlan says the national training system will be delivered with trade partners and unions, aiming to equip more than 1,800 unionized construction workers with advanced energy-efficiency skills that reduce energy use while strengthening Red Seal pathways.
Why it matters for women:
National, recognized trade training can be a practical on-ramp for women considering a shift into skilled trades connected to energy efficiency and low-carbon construction, without implying the program is women-only.
Practical step:
If you are exploring a career change, check Red Seal pathways in your province that connect to energy-efficiency work (including insulation), and watch for funded training intakes announced through sector partners.
