Novo Nordisk warns generics for Ozempic and Wegovy could slow sales in Canada

Novo Nordisk says demand for its semaglutide-based medicines in Canada could soften in 2026 as generic versions move closer to the market following the end of exclusivity in Canada, according to the company’s earnings commentary and investor call on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
CFO Karsten Munk Knudsen said the company expects the international “semaglutide loss of exclusivity” to weigh on group sales by low single digits, with Canada the largest contributor. He added the company’s outlook could shift depending on the pace of generic approvals in Canada.
Canadian Medical Association reporting notes that regulatory exclusivity for semaglutide ended in Canada on January 4, 2026, and that generic versions may begin appearing around mid-2026 rather than immediately, as Health Canada reviews applications.
The update comes as Novo faces intensifying competition and pricing pressure in the global obesity and diabetes drug market, factors also reflected in its broader 2026 guidance.
