An Ontario New Democratic Party MPP has resigned her Queen's Park seat and left the party after being selected as the federal Liberal candidate for a yet-to-be-called byelection in Scarborough Southwest, Canadian media reported.
Doly Begum, a former Ontario NDP deputy leader, will seek the Liberal nomination in the riding following the planned resignation of Liberal MP Bill Blair, who has been tapped for a diplomatic post, according to CityNews and other reports.
Begum was first elected provincially in 2018 and re-elected in 2022 and 2025, and served as the NDP’s public transit critic, CityNews reported.
In a related development, Liberal MP Nate Erskine-Smith said he plans to pursue a provincial run in the seat being vacated by Begum.
