Canadian Finance and National Revenue Minister François-Philippe Champagne has begun a visit to China running from March 31 to April 4, in a move the government says is aimed at building strategic and economic partnerships and attracting new investment as part of a broader push to diversify Canada’s trade relationships. The Finance Department said the trip includes meetings with government officials and business leaders in China.
The department said China, as the world’s second-largest economy, remains an important market for Canada, adding that two-way merchandise trade between the two countries stands at C$118.9 billion, making China Canada’s second-largest single-country trading partner. Ottawa said the visit also fits its wider effort to strengthen the resilience of the Canadian economy in what it described as a more divided and uncertain global environment.
The visit also aligns with the direction set out after Prime Minister Mark Carney’s January 2026 trip to China, which produced a new strategic partnership and an economic and trade cooperation roadmap between the two countries.
