Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is urging Prime Minister Mark Carney and the Liberal government to deliver quick, tangible results when Parliament returns next week, arguing that speeches must translate into action on affordability, public safety and major projects.
In a letter to Carney titled "Time to turn rhetoric into reality", Poilievre said he is prepared to help fast track measures to implement trade deals, lower grocery costs, fix the bail system and move major projects forward. He also suggested Conservative MPs could join bipartisan delegations to the United States or other partners to help expand market access for Canadian exports.
At the same time, Poilievre used the letter to criticize the government’s record, citing a line from Carney’s Davos speech about countries needing to feed themselves, fuel themselves and defend themselves. Poilievre argued Canada is falling short despite what he called Liberal rhetoric, and said Canadians need outcomes rather than announcements.
Government House Leader Steven MacKinnon said the Liberals hope to pass significant legislation this spring and that the government is reviewing Poilievre’s proposals, expressing hope for a more cooperative tone. The Prime Minister’s Office did not immediately comment on the letter, according to reports.
Over the past two days, Poilievre also released a separate response to Carney’s Davos remarks, praising the speech’s tone while stressing what he called a gap between rhetoric and reality. He reiterated an offer to work with the government against U.S. tariffs and said Conservatives plan to bring forward a parliamentary motion tied to what they call the Canadian Sovereignty Act next week
