Poll: One in four Canadians say they’ve been victims of fraud or extortion, but only about half report it

The online Leger poll (n=1,536; Feb. 6-9, 2026) found 25% of respondents reported being victims of fraud or extortion, with 71% saying they were not. The most commonly reported scam types were credit-card/bank fraud (52% targeted), online scams such as phishing or fake websites (36%), and phone/text scams (31%).
The survey also suggests only about half of victims report incidents to police or authorities, even as most discuss what happened with family or friends. Nearly three quarters said they worry about becoming a victim in the future, and 89% still expressed confidence they can recognize scams—what Leger described as a “confidence paradox.”
How to report (official)
Report online via Canada’s fraud/cybercrime reporting portal and contact local police as soon as possible if you’ve been victimized.
