Prime Minister Mark Carney says Qatar has committed to "significant strategic investments" to support major building projects in Canada, arguing the capital could accelerate construction, strengthen Canada’s energy industries, and create jobs.
Speaking at a news conference in Doha, Carney called the move a "new chapter" in bilateral ties. He added that Ottawa and Doha plan to expand people-to-people links, including widening direct flight options between Canada and Qatar to boost tourism and business.
Carney said Canada aims to finalize an Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement with Qatar by this summer after years of stalled talks. He also pointed to plans to appoint a defence attaché in Doha to deepen co-operation on security and defence.
Earlier, Carney took part in an official welcoming ceremony and met with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and invited him to visit Canada later this year.
