Quebec is launching two new programs to support businesses affected by the new 50 per cent U.S. tariffs, with applications set to open next week in the province's first direct economic response following the collapse of Canada U.S. trade negotiations.
Premier Christine Fréchette said the first program will target small and medium sized businesses with annual revenues between $1 million and $2 million, while the second will be available to businesses with revenues above $2 million. Full eligibility requirements and the amount of assistance available to individual companies have not yet been released.
Economy Minister Bernard Drainville said Quebec's measures will complement assistance expected from the federal government for businesses affected by the trade dispute with Washington.
The announcement comes as business groups call for rapid help to protect liquidity and jobs. The Quebec Federation of Chambers of Commerce described the failed negotiations and new tariffs as a worst-case scenario for businesses and called for non repayable financial assistance and other relief for affected companies.
Fréchette also said she would raise the protection of Quebec businesses and workers with Prime Minister Mark Carney and wants Ottawa to consult Quebec on any retaliatory measures Canada introduces against the United States.
