Everyday Habits That May Increase Breast Cancer Risk

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the conversation should not focus on screening alone. Some everyday habits may gradually increase breast cancer risk, even though no single habit directly causes the disease.
Alcohol consumption is one of the clearest lifestyle-related risk factors. Evidence shows that breast cancer risk rises as alcohol intake increases, and the concern is not limited to heavy drinking.
Physical inactivity is another factor linked to higher risk, while regular movement can help reduce risk and support overall health and weight management.
Smoking also matters. Its health effects extend far beyond the lungs, and research has linked tobacco use with an increased risk of breast cancer.
Excess body weight becomes particularly important after menopause, when hormonal changes can affect breast cancer risk. That does not mean younger women are protected; breast cancer can occur at different stages of life.
Some forms of postmenopausal hormone therapy also require regular medical review, especially when used over long periods.
The key message is simple: prevention does not mean eliminating risk entirely. It means reducing the factors we can control — staying active, avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, and reviewing hormone therapy with a healthcare professional when needed.
