How Often Should You Wash Your Clothes? Experts Break It Down

Not every item of clothing needs to go into the laundry after a single wear. Expert guidance shows that washing frequency depends largely on how closely a garment sits against the skin and how much sweat, dirt or odor it collects.

Underwear, socks, T-shirts, leggings, tights and swimsuits should generally be washed after every wear. Clothing with visible stains or noticeable odors should also be cleaned promptly.

Jeans can typically be worn about three times before washing, while bras may go two or three wears between washes. Pajamas usually need laundering after three or four wears, although people who shower before bed and sweat little may be able to wait longer.

Dress shirts, trousers and skirts can often be worn several times as long as they remain clean and free of sweat or stains. Coats generally require washing only once or twice during a season, depending on use and care instructions.

Workout clothing is different. Dermatologists recommend washing it after every use because sweat, oil and bacteria left on fabric can contribute to skin irritation, breakouts and some infections.

Bath towels should generally be washed after three to five uses and dried thoroughly in between. Bed sheets should be washed at least every two weeks and more often for people who sweat heavily at night.

Heavy sweating, stains, odors and hot weather can all mean a garment needs washing sooner, regardless of how many times it has been worn.
