Three April by-elections set an early political test for Carney's government

Three federal by-elections scheduled for April 13 are shaping up as an early political test for Mark Carney's government after votes were called in Scarborough Southwest, University-Rosedale and Terrebonne. Elections Canada has also moved into the operational phase, opening offices in the three ridings and setting advance voting for April 3 through April 6.
By-elections do not usually carry the same national intensity as a general election, but the timing gives these contests added political weight. They will be watched as an early sign of whether the new government can consolidate its parliamentary footing and measure political sentiment across different regions, with two ridings in Ontario and one in Quebec.
The significance of the story goes beyond simply filling vacant seats. It also lies in whether the government can turn its early political start into real electoral momentum, or whether opposition parties will use these contests to send an early message to Ottawa about the direction of the next phase of federal politics.
