Toronto stock index futures rose on Monday, supported by increased demand for safe-haven assets, while global markets reacted to volatility tied to political and economic developments surrounding Venezuela.
The move came alongside gains in gold prices and firm oil markets, as investors weighed potential risks to global energy supplies stemming from sanctions and uncertainty related to Venezuela.
Analysts said energy and natural resource stocks — which carry significant weight in Canada’s benchmark index — benefited from the backdrop, helping lift futures.
Markets remain cautious ahead of key economic data due later this week, including employment reports from Canada and the United States, which could influence expectations for interest rates and monetary policy.
