US Panel Approves Trump Gold Coin Design

The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts approved on Thursday, March 19, 2026, the final design for a 24-karat gold commemorative coin featuring President Donald Trump as part of the country’s 250th Independence Day celebrations on July 4, 2026. The unanimous vote clears the way for the U.S. Mint to move forward with the project.

The move is unusual because U.S. rules and tradition generally do not allow a living president to appear on circulating currency. The administration, however, is relying on Treasury authority over non-circulating commemorative gold coins to advance the issue. That approach has already drawn political and professional criticism in the United States.

Under the approved design, Trump appears on the obverse beneath the word "LIBERTY" and the dates 1776 and 2026, while the reverse shows a bald eagle. The final size and denomination have not yet been set, but the design approval marks a key step toward production.
