32,000 Steps a Day: Vancouver Challenge Raises Thousands for Cancer Research

Tarrin McDonough, co-creator of Vancouver’s Styrogirls, has turned her daily walks into a fundraising campaign for cancer research, setting herself the goal of completing one million steps during August while raising money for BC Cancer.
McDonough is walking roughly 32,000 steps a day to reach the million-step target by the end of the month. She hopes to raise $5,000, and donations had already surpassed $3,000 by Saturday.
She said the idea took shape after sitting with a group of eight women and realizing that six of them were cancer survivors, an experience that highlighted how widely the disease touches families and communities.
McDonough and her sister Sorrel plan to finish the challenge on August 31 with a special walk featuring one of their Styrofoam creations in tribute to late Canadian actress Catherine O’Hara, combining the sisters’ well-known Vancouver art project with the campaign’s fundraising message.
