WestJet Cancels 86 Flights as Long-Weekend Strike Deadline Nears

WestJet has begun proactively cancelling dozens of flights as the deadline approaches for a possible strike or employer lockout involving approximately 4,400 flight attendants during Canada’s busy August long weekend.
The number of cancelled flights had risen to 86 by Saturday afternoon, August 1, after earlier reports placed the total at 81. WestJet has issued its own lockout notice that could take effect at the same time. Union of Public Employees, CUPE 8125, represents about 4,400 WestJet cabin crew members. A central issue in the negotiations is compensation for duties performed before takeoff and after landing, including boarding passengers, conducting safety checks and working during ground delays. it remains at the bargaining table and is committed to reaching a negotiated tentative agreement.
