A powerful winter storm caused major travel disruptions across the Greater Toronto Area on Thursday, January 15, 2026, and also impacted Ottawa and Montreal, as Environment Canada warnings highlighted hazardous conditions, reduced visibility and difficult driving due to snow, wind and cold temperatures.
Greater Toronto Area
Environment Canada placed Toronto under a significant snowfall warning, with heavy accumulations expected in parts of the region. The storm slowed traffic on major routes and increased the risk of collisions and black ice.
Local reporting said the Don Valley Parkway was temporarily closed during the morning after a series of crashes, while officials urged drivers to avoid non essential travel.
Air travel was also affected, with widespread delays and cancellations reported at Toronto Pearson and Billy Bishop airports. Travellers were advised to check flight status before heading to the airport.
Several school boards and institutions across the GTA announced closures or suspended in person attendance due to the weather.
Ottawa
In the capital, officials warned of heavy snowfall through the day, with wind and blowing snow contributing to reduced visibility and difficult road conditions.
OC Transpo issued winter service alerts, warning of delays and disruptions on some routes as road conditions worsened.
Montreal
In Montreal, local reports described challenging road conditions and scattered collisions as snow fell and temperatures dropped.
Public transit also faced disruption, including a temporary service issue on the REM earlier in the day, before service was reported to have resumed
