Air Canada to cut New York flights from June as fuel costs climb

Air Canada has announced it will cut four daily flights to the New York area starting June 1, 2026, after a sharp rise in jet fuel prices pushed the carrier to reassess some lower-margin routes. The move will reduce the airline’s daily New York schedule from 38 flights to 34.
The change includes suspending flights to John F. Kennedy International Airport from Toronto and Montreal until October 25, 2026. Air Canada said it will continue serving the New York market through LaGuardia and Newark, while offering alternative arrangements to affected customers.
The decision highlights how rising fuel costs are beginning to reshape airline operations and passenger travel planning. For travellers, it is another sign that global energy disruptions are no longer confined to oil markets alone, but are increasingly influencing route choices, capacity, and potentially the overall cost of travel. That broader point is an inference based on Air Canada’s move and wider airline responses reported across the sector.
