AI Worms Could Target Smart Homes as Researchers Warn of Emerging Cyber Threat

Smart TVs, connected appliances and home security cameras could provide the infrastructure for a new generation of self-spreading AI malware, according to cybersecurity researchers. The concern is not an ongoing outbreak in Canadian homes, but an emerging threat that may become more practical as smaller artificial intelligence models grow more capable.

The warning follows research published by Anthropic on October 12. Its team demonstrated that 15 inexpensive Android TV boxes could collectively run an AI model, using computing resources distributed across the devices. The experiment showed that consumer hardware may support sophisticated AI operations, although researchers did not demonstrate a fully autonomous worm spreading across real household devices.

Canadian researchers have independently explored the threat. In June, a University of Toronto team led by Nicolas Papernot demonstrated an AI-powered computer worm in a controlled laboratory environment. Unlike conventional malware programmed to exploit specific weaknesses, the prototype could adapt its attack strategy as it encountered different devices, including computers, printers and cameras.

A successful real-world attack could potentially exploit poorly secured devices to spread across a home or business network, drawing on their processing power and seeking additional vulnerabilities. Anthropic cautioned, however, that current small models still face substantial technical obstacles to reliably reproducing themselves without human assistance.

For consumers, the advice remains familiar: install security updates, replace default passwords, enable multifactor authentication where available and review which household devices genuinely need internet access. Canadian consumer guidance recommends considering security and privacy protections before purchasing connected products, not simply after they have been installed.
