Halifax Regional Police said on Friday, October 9, 2026, that the threat which forced Halifax West High School into lockdown for more than three hours the previous day was a hoax call originating outside Canada, as investigators continue working with U.S. law-enforcement authorities to trace its source.

The incident began at about 12:25 p.m. on Thursday, October 8, when a man called the school claiming he was on the property with a weapon. The school was placed under a full lockdown and police were called to the scene.

Officers carried out a systematic search of the building while students and staff who were outside the school were directed to a secure location away from the campus.

Police found no evidence of an actual threat inside the school, and the lockdown was lifted at 3:45 p.m., more than three hours after the emergency response began.

In an update issued Friday, police said the call was determined to have originated outside Canada and that investigators are working with law-enforcement agencies in Florida as part of efforts to identify its source.

No charges have been laid, and the investigation remains ongoing.
