Apple has moved into the lower-cost laptop segment with the launch of the MacBook Neo, a new model starting at $599, in a step that places the company in more direct competition with Chromebooks and budget Windows laptops. Pre-orders began on March 4, with market availability set for March 11.
The new laptop runs on the A18 Pro chip, the same processor used in the iPhone 16 Pro, highlighting Apple’s use of its existing technology to introduce a lower-priced Mac device while maintaining performance aimed at everyday and education-focused use.
The launch is notable because it places Apple in a more affordable price tier than it has typically targeted in recent years. It also comes at a time when competition in the budget device market is intensifying and price sensitivity remains a major factor for students and cost-conscious buyers.
MacBook Neo comes with 8GB of unified memory, positioning it within Apple’s entry-level lineup and reinforcing its focus on daily tasks, study, and light work rather than more demanding professional use.
The release suggests a broader effort by Apple to expand its user base beyond its traditional premium segment through a device that combines the Mac brand with a lower entry price, potentially giving the company stronger reach in education and other price-sensitive markets.
