Asus showcased an early Wi-Fi 8 router concept and related demonstrations at CES 2026 in Las Vegas, as the industry pushes ahead even while Wi-Fi 7 adoption remains relatively limited across many households and devices.
According to tech reports, Wi-Fi 8 is positioned less as a pure speed upgrade and more as a reliability push, aiming to keep fast connections stable while users move around or farther from the router, reducing dropouts for streaming, gaming, and other latency sensitive uses.
In a company release, Asus said it plans to ship its first Wi-Fi 8 home routers and mesh systems in 2026, describing Wi-Fi 8 as a shift toward smarter, more reliable connections.
Broadcom also announced Wi-Fi 8 chips at CES for residential routers and service provider gateways, while MediaTek introduced its own Wi-Fi 8 chipset family aimed at a wide range of premium devices.
The Wi-Fi 8 standard, tied to IEEE 802.11bn, is not yet finalized. Current IEEE timelines point to final approval in 2028, meaning early products are expected to rely on draft specifications and may require updates later.
