Canada caps online passport renewals with daily intake limits, here’s what applicants need to know

Canada is limiting how many people can start an online passport renewal application each day as it monitors system performance, according to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Applicants can create an account at any time, but once the daily limit is reached, they won’t be able to begin an application until the next reset.

IRCC says the limit resets twice daily at 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Eastern Time, and applicants can still renew in person or by mail if they can’t start online.

Online renewal also remains restricted to eligible clients in Canada, including adults renewing their own regular (blue) passport issued within the last 15 years, and passports that are expired or expiring within the next six months. Applicants must not need a passport for at least 20 business days plus mailing time, because the current passport is cancelled once the online renewal is submitted.

IRCC also requires a compliant digital photo taken in person by a commercial photographer, less than six months old, and not a scan of a printed photo.
