Several regions across Canada are facing a sharp rise in influenza cases, intensifying overcrowding in emergency departments and placing significant strain on hospitals and ambulance services, particularly in Quebec and the city of Montreal.

Recent health reports indicate that Montreal emergency rooms are operating at more than 135% capacity, as the flu season coincides with a surge in injuries linked to harsh winter conditions, including falls on icy streets and sidewalks.

Emergency services have also reported a notable increase in 911 calls over the past few days, driven by respiratory illnesses alongside weather-related incidents, further stretching paramedic and hospital resources.

Health officials warn that pressure on the healthcare system is expected to continue in the coming weeks as respiratory virus activity peaks. Canadians are being urged to get their flu shots and seek primary care or clinics when appropriate to help ease the burden on emergency departments.
