Canada's Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, Evan Solomon, says Ottawa is not considering banning X, amid controversy over sexualized, non-consensual deepfakes linked to the platform's Grok chatbot.
In a post on X shortly after midnight Sunday, Solomon said reports suggesting Canada is weighing a ban are incorrect, adding the government is focusing on legislative measures aimed at criminalizing sexual deepfakes.
The statement comes as international pressure grows on X and Grok following reports of widespread misuse, while the UK has urged the platform to act quickly and regulators have signaled possible enforcement action.
In Canada, legal and tech observers have pointed to gaps in existing frameworks governing deepfakes and privacy, with the minister's office indicating updated legislation and a refreshed AI strategy are expected this year.
