Canada pitches itself as Europe’s “supplier of choice” amid strains with Washington

The Financial Times reports that Canada is positioning itself as Europe’s “supplier of choice” across strategic sectors, including energy, defence-related industries and critical raw materials, as transatlantic tensions and European “buy local” instincts reshape trade and security partnerships.
The push intersects with Canada’s participation in the EU’s SAFE instrument, which supports defence industrial production through common procurement and enables purchases from partner industries, including Canada under an agreement concluded under SAFE’s framework.
Reuters, citing a Canadian defence strategy document released February 17, 2026, says Ottawa is seeking to reduce reliance on U.S. arms suppliers and expand domestic procurement, while noting SAFE participation broadens access for Canadian firms to European defence markets.
Canada’s PMO has also framed the effort as part of a broader agenda to strengthen security and supply chains with allies, highlighting cooperation on energy security, critical minerals and advanced technologies, alongside SAFE participation.
