Canada Post is expanding its community mailbox conversion plan, with approximately 485,000 additional addresses set to move from door-to-door delivery to community mailboxes in 2027. The Crown corporation says the move is part of a broader transformation plan aimed at modernizing postal service and returning the organization to financial self-sustainability.
The new phase will affect 37 communities across Canada, in addition to the 136,000 addresses in 13 communities already identified for conversion in late 2026 or early 2027. Canada Post says it will contact local governments in the coming weeks and months as it prepares for the transition.
According to Canada Post, nearly three quarters of Canadian addresses already receive mail and parcels through some form of secure centralized delivery, including community mailboxes, apartment lobby boxes and post office boxes. The corporation says converting the remaining door-to-door addresses will improve security by placing most mail and parcels under lock and key, while also reducing delivery costs.
In Ontario, the 2027 conversions will include about 158,000 addresses in communities such as Ajax, Brampton, Hawkesbury, Kitchener, London, Mississauga, Ottawa and Pickering. Québec will see about 139,000 addresses converted, while British Columbia will see about 81,000, and Alberta about 56,000 in Calgary and Edmonton.
Canada Post says residents will not be switched without notice. Once mailbox locations are finalized, affected households will receive information about where their new community mailbox will be located, as well as notice and keys before any change to delivery takes place.
The change may raise practical concerns for seniors, people with disabilities and residents with mobility challenges. Canada Post says its Delivery Accommodation Program will continue to provide free support for customers with functional limitations. Options may include easier-to-use compartments, sliding trays, Braille features or, in some cases, weekly home delivery on a seasonal, temporary or permanent basis.
For residents, the most important point is that the change will not happen overnight. Affected households should wait for an official notice from Canada Post before taking any action. Parcels that do not fit in a community mailbox, or that require a signature, will continue to be delivered to the door or held for pickup at a nearby post office.
