U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that Canada was working hard to reach a trade agreement with Washington, portraying the United States as the stronger party in a tariff dispute that has kept bilateral negotiations on hold since August.Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump claimed that the United States held the decisive bargaining advantage, according to Reuters.
A spokesperson for Dominic LeBlanc, Canada's minister responsible for trade with the United States, declined to comment on the president's remarks.
Negotiations collapsed in August following disagreements over trade terms, triggering additional tariffs and retaliatory measures. Trump's comments provided no details of a potential agreement, and neither government announced a resumption of formal talks.
