Canadian Government Websites Offline Over PHP Security Flaws

Canadians continued to face disruptions accessing federal government websites Thursday as authorities worked to secure online services against two critical software vulnerabilities affecting organizations worldwide.
Statistics Canada was among the agencies whose websites became unavailable, along with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office and other federal services.
The federal government's chief information officer confirmed that security updates were underway and that some websites could remain inaccessible while systems were being protected.
Officials said there was no indication that federal government systems or information had been compromised.
The disruptions followed the discovery of two serious flaws in PHP, a programming language widely used to operate websites. The vulnerabilities could allow attackers to execute unauthorized commands on affected servers, potentially exposing sensitive systems.
Canada's Cyber Security Centre issued an alert Wednesday urging organizations to install security patches immediately and examine their systems for suspicious activity.
Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation Minister Evan Solomon said the government had taken affected websites offline as a precaution, following guidance from federal cybersecurity authorities.
The response is part of a broader international effort. Governments and companies across Europe and Asia have also suspended online services while applying emergency fixes.
According to Reuters, cybersecurity company Cloudflare reported millions of attempted attacks following the public disclosure of the vulnerabilities.
For Canadians, the immediate impact is reduced access to certain online government services rather than a confirmed data breach.
Ottawa says restoration work is continuing, with websites returning to service once the necessary security measures have been implemented.
