Food bank visits across Canada reached a record 2.35 million in March 2026, up 8.7 per cent from a year earlier, according to the HungerCount 2026 report released Wednesday by Food Banks Canada.

The annual report found that visits have surged 117 per cent since 2019, with children accounting for nearly 776,000 visits in March alone. The figures reflect the number of visits rather than individual recipients, as households continue to struggle with rising grocery prices and housing costs.

Employment is no guarantee of food security. The report found that 18 per cent of food bank clients were employed, compared with 12.2 per cent in 2019, underscoring the financial pressure facing Canadians whose earnings no longer cover basic living expenses.

Food Banks Canada CEO Kirstin Beardsley told The Canadian Press that having a job is no longer enough to keep some Canadians from relying on food banks. She described the federal government's new Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit as a positive investment but said it falls far short of meeting the needs of struggling households, particularly in northern communities where grocery prices are significantly higher.
