CRA to Pre-Fill One Million Tax Returns Next Spring — But an October Deadline Comes First

A new Canada Revenue Agency program could spare one million lower-income Canadians much of the paperwork involved in preparing their tax returns next year. But those hoping to qualify have an important deadline approaching.
The CRA is asking potential participants to have their 2025 tax returns filed and their online account settings updated by October 31, 2026 — a cutoff that could determine whether they are considered for an invitation.
Beginning in March 2027, the agency plans to offer eligible taxpayers a draft of their 2026 return using information it already holds. Recipients will review the figures, make corrections, supply missing information and authorize the final submission.
The service is free, but it is not automatic filing. Taxpayers remain responsible for checking and submitting their returns.
Who could receive an invitation?
The initial rollout targets people with lower incomes and straightforward tax circumstances who have no tax payable.
Potential recipients must have filed their 2025 return by October 31, hold a CRA online account and have electronic correspondence enabled.
Meeting the criteria does not guarantee selection. The CRA has also not published a single income threshold for the new program.
Importantly, October 31 is not a new general income tax filing deadline. It is the cutoff for meeting requirements connected to this particular service.
For Canadians who still need to file their 2025 returns, help is already available. The CRA's existing SimpleFile program offers simplified filing options, while free tax clinics assist eligible people with modest incomes.
Filing matters even when no tax is owed, since annual returns are used to determine eligibility for income-tested government payments, including the Canada Child Benefit.
The CRA intends to expand the new pre-filled return service to 5.5 million invitation recipients by March 2029.
Canadians who want to be considered can review the requirements and update their accounts through the CRA's official website before October 31.
