Canada Scales Back Remote Work in 2026 as Thousands Return to Offices Full-Time

Canada entered 2026 with significant shifts in workplace policies, as several provincial governments moved to reduce remote work arrangements and require thousands of public-sector employees to return to offices on a full-time basis, particularly in Ontario and Alberta.
As of January 5, 2026, Ontario has required provincial government employees to work from the office five days a week, marking a clear step away from hybrid work models adopted in recent years.
Alberta has also announced that public service employees will return to full-time in-office work starting February, citing goals of strengthening collaboration, accountability, and service quality for Albertans.
Other provinces, including Manitoba, British Columbia, and New Brunswick, continue to maintain more flexible hybrid policies. Meanwhile, Newfoundland and Labrador and the Northwest Territories are reviewing their remote-work frameworks, with no current plans to mandate a full five-day in-office schedule.
At the federal level, it remains unclear whether mandatory office attendance will increase. Prime Minister Mark Carney said last month that clearer direction on the federal return-to-office plan would emerge “soon,” noting that consultations with unions are ongoing and that further details are expected in the coming weeks.
Federal employees are currently required to work from the office at least three days per week, while senior executives must attend four days weekly, a policy in effect since September 2024.
