Documents recently tabled in Parliament show Canadians did not cash millions of federal government paper cheques over the past four fiscal years. The figures indicate roughly 3.9 million cheques went uncashed, with a total value of about $2.16 billion.
The documents say the uncashed payments include a mix of federal disbursements issued by the Canada Revenue Agency and other departments, such as tax refunds, pension cheques, and benefits.
How to check if you have an uncashed cheque
The CRA says individuals can view eligible uncashed cheques through the “Uncashed cheques” feature in My Account and follow the steps provided to request action on older, uncashed payments.
The CRA has also stated that government-issued cheques do not expire, and Canadians can request help to claim or replace payments through official channels.
