Canadian consumers could see higher prices on some U.S.-made goods after Ottawa updated its retaliatory tariff list ahead of measures taking effect on September 8, 2026.

Products facing tariffs of up to 50 per cent include copper wire, wood charcoal, certain printed and paper products, plastic packaging materials, and glass bottles and containers, along with a broad range of steel, aluminum and industrial products. Canada's package includes tariff rates of 15, 25 and 50 per cent depending on the product.

The tariffs do not automatically mean retail prices will rise by the same percentage. Importers and retailers may absorb part of the added cost or switch suppliers, but U.S. products covered by the measures will become more expensive to bring into Canada.

Ottawa also revised the original list by removing U.S. fish and seafood products after receiving industry feedback, saying the change was intended to protect against unintended economic harm.

The countermeasures cover approximately C$27.6 billion in U.S. imports and are scheduled to take effect at 12:01 a.m. on September 8.
