Canadian Women Call for Gender-Inclusive Energy Policy Reform

Women-led advocacy organizations across Canada are renewing calls for comprehensive energy policy reform, urging federal decision-makers to accelerate clean energy investments, reassess fossil fuel subsidies, and embed Just Transition frameworks into national climate strategies. In recent public statements and policy submissions, these groups have emphasized that energy and climate policies must integrate gender equity considerations, noting that environmental and economic impacts of energy systems often fall disproportionately on women.
Advocates highlight that women—particularly those in Indigenous, rural, and resource-dependent communities—are more likely to experience the social and health burdens associated with fossil fuel extraction, environmental degradation, and energy insecurity.
The organizations argue that a Just Transition toward low-carbon energy must go beyond emissions targets to include: equitable job creation, community-led planning, and protections for workers and families affected by shifts away from fossil fuel industries.
They also stress that women’s leadership and lived experiences should play a central role in shaping Canada’s energy future, warning that excluding gender perspectives risks reinforcing existing inequalities during the transition to clean energy.
Policy analysts note that the growing visibility of women-led climate advocacy reflects a broader shift in Canada’s public debate, where environmental policy is increasingly linked to social justice, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, and inclusive economic planning.
