Montreal hosted a preparatory gathering Thursday evening for the inaugural edition of an Egyptian film festival in Canada, at the residence of Ambassador Nabil Mekky, Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Montreal. The event brought together the festival’s founders and members of the cultural and film communities to introduce the project and connect with those interested in Egyptian and Arab cinema ahead of its first edition.

The gathering formed part of preparations that began in June, with the inaugural festival scheduled to take place in September 2027 under the patronage of the Consulate General of Egypt in Montreal.

Media professional Nour Sobhy said the idea of launching an Egyptian film festival in Canada grew out of a shared vision she developed with filmmaker Ahmed Bondok, centered on connecting second- and third-generation members of the Egyptian community with their culture and heritage through cinema as an effective means of passing cultural memory to younger generations.

The reception was attended by members of the film and cultural communities, while the Egyptian Consulate General’s role includes patronage of the festival and hosting the preparatory gathering as organizational work continues toward the inaugural edition.
