British-Egyptian actor and producer Amir El-Masry has been selected to lead the First Feature Competition jury at the 70th BFI London Film Festival, putting him at the head of the panel that will decide this year's Sutherland Award. The BFI announced the juries on September 30, ahead of the festival's October 7–18 run.
El-Masry will be joined by Filipino independent film producer Alemberg Ang and international film sales, distribution and awards strategy executive Rosa Bosch. Together, the three-member jury will choose from 10 films competing in the festival's First Feature Competition.
The Sutherland Award recognises what the festival describes as the most original and imaginative directorial debut. This year's contenders include 9 Temples to Heaven, Animol, Ben’Imana, A Common Story and Our Share of Sand.
El-Masry won a BAFTA Scotland award for his performance in Limbo and was named a BAFTA Breakthrough Brit in 2020 and a Screen International Star of Tomorrow in 2021. His recent film credits include the Naseem Hamed biopic Giant and 100 Nights of Hero.
The festival's 70th edition will present 251 titles from 88 countries across features, shorts, series and immersive works during its 12-day
