‘The Stories’ to Represent Egypt in 2027 Oscar Race

Egypt has selected The Stories, written and directed by Abu Bakr Shawky, as its official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 99th Academy Awards, scheduled for March 2027. The film was chosen following a vote by the Egyptian committee responsible for selecting the country's Oscar entry.
The Stories led both rounds of voting. It received 22 votes in the first round and secured 14 votes in the final ballot, which included four films. The selection committee comprised 53 members, with 42 participating in the process, and considered 36 Egyptian films produced between September 2025 and September 2026.
Egypt's selection does not constitute an Oscar nomination. The film will now enter the Academy's international feature selection process alongside submissions from other countries before the shortlist and final nominees are determined.
Set against Egypt's changing social and political landscape from the late 1960s through the 1980s, The Stories follows an aspiring Egyptian pianist and his relationship with an Austrian woman, beginning with an exchange of letters and developing across years of personal and historical change.
The cast includes Nelly Karim, Amir El-Masry, Ahmed Kamal, Sabry Fawaz, Amr Abed, Sherif El Desouky and Ahmed El Azaar. The production brings together partners from Egypt and several European countries.
The selection marks Shawky's second time representing Egypt in the Oscar race. His feature Yomeddine was chosen as Egypt's submission in 2018. The Stories has also appeared at international film festivals and won the Golden Tanit for Best Feature Film at the Carthage Film Festival in 2025.
