Canada Records Seventh-Lowest Fertility Rate Among 20 High-Income Countries

Canada recorded the seventh-lowest fertility rate among 20 selected high-income countries in 2025, as the country’s total fertility rate remained at 1.26 children per woman, highlighting a continuing shift in family formation and the timing of motherhood.
According to Statistics Canada data released September 23, the fertility rate was unchanged from 2024 and remained at its lowest level on record under the latest figures. Canada had ranked closer to the middle of the selected group for many years before beginning to move toward the lower-fertility countries in 2018.
Among the 20 countries examined, the United States recorded the highest fertility rate at 1.57 children per woman, followed by Iceland and France at 1.56 each. South Korea had the lowest rate, at 0.80 children per woman.
The fertility trend is unfolding alongside another major demographic shift: Canadians are having children later. The average age of mothers at childbirth reached a record 31.9 years in 2025, compared with 26.7 years roughly five decades ago, continuing a long-term rise in the age of motherhood.
Eight of Canada’s 13 provinces and territories also recorded their lowest fertility rates on record in 2025. Yukon had the lowest rate in the country at 1.02 children per woman, followed by Nova Scotia at 1.07 and Newfoundland and Labrador at 1.08.
