Muhammad has entered Canada’s list of the 20 most popular baby boy names for the first time, ranking 20th in 2025, according to the latest data released by Statistics Canada. A total of 807 baby boys were given the name during the year.
The ranking comes from Canada’s latest Baby Names Observatory update, which tracks names registered for newborns using national vital statistics data and information from Retraite Québec.
Noah remained Canada’s most popular name for boys for the fifth consecutive year, with 2,190 babies receiving the name in 2025. Theodore ranked second, followed by Liam.
Among girls, Charlotte took the top spot for the first time, ending Olivia’s nine-year run at No. 1. Charlotte was given to 1,502 baby girls, compared with 1,445 named Olivia.
Statistics Canada counts each spelling variation as a separate name. This means Muhammad’s ranking applies specifically to that spelling and does not automatically include alternatives such as Mohammed or Mohammad.
