Iran Links Strait of Hormuz Reopening to Conditions for Washington

Iran has linked the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to steps by the United States to ease military and economic pressure, as diplomatic contacts between the two sides continue on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
A senior Iranian official said Tehran could reopen the strategic waterway within seven days if Washington reduces military pressure and begins lifting its blockade on Iranian ports. Iran’s latest proposal was delivered to the United States through mediators on September 16, according to Reuters.
Iranian state media said Tehran’s conditions also include lifting the naval blockade, releasing frozen Iranian assets and ending military operations on fronts connected to the conflict. Washington has not publicly accepted those demands.
The contacts in New York involved Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and U.S. representatives, with mediators moving between the two delegations. Accounts differed over whether all parts of the discussions were conducted directly or indirectly.
The Strait of Hormuz remains central to the negotiations because of its importance to global energy shipments, while regional mediators continue efforts to reduce tensions and restore freedom of navigation through the waterway.
