11 Hospitalized After Suspicious Apartment Fire in Mississauga

Eleven people, including a police officer, were taken to hospital after an early-morning fire at a residential building in Mississauga on Monday, as Peel Regional Police said the blaze is being treated as suspicious.
Emergency crews were called to the area of Inverhouse Drive and Lakeshore Road West at about 3:38 a.m. Firefighters, police and paramedics responded as residents were evacuated and crews worked to bring the fire under control.
Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services Deputy Chief Ryan Baird said firefighters rescued 16 people from the third and fourth floors of the building. Some residents were later allowed to return to their units, while those living on the third floor remained displaced.
Paramedics said two people suffered serious but non-life-threatening burns, while eight others were treated for minor smoke inhalation. A police officer was also taken to hospital with injuries authorities said were not directly caused by the fire. A firefighter sustained a minor injury during the response.
Fire officials also disclosed that the building had experienced several fires in recent days, including another incident on the same floor a day earlier. Authorities are now investigating whether the latest fire was deliberately set.
Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal was notified and is assisting with the investigation. No arrests had been announced, and authorities had not released further details about how the fire began.
